New Recital Space for Trinity Music School

Overview

Trinity School’s Music Department is one of the best known in Britain. Famous for the Trinity Boys’ Choir, it provides outstanding educational opportunities for instrumentalists and singers alike and is London’s first all-Steinway secondary school. HMY was appointed as part of the design team to deliver the new accommodation within an existing courtyard, linked to the existing music school facilities.

A flexible recital hall, which can also be used for symphony orchestra rehearsals, lies at the heart of the development with supporting accommodation wrapped around. This includes:

  • three state-of-the-art Music ICT suites
  • recording studio linked to practice rooms and recital hall
  • dedicated Choir Room
  • Steinway Piano Suite including six teaching rooms housing Steinway instruments and a performance space for piano recitals
  • new practice and instrumental teaching rooms designed for specific instruments such as percussion, drum kit and woodwind

The project required careful co-ordination and detailing to meet the exacting acoustic standards for such spaces, with music practice rooms fabricated off-site and imported from Germany.
