24 Bed ITU, William Harvey Hospital

Overview

HMY were appointed in 2020 to carry out a feasibility study, outline design and Employers Requirements for a new 24 Bed Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU) Department by 2Gether Support Solutions (EKHUFT) to be procured under a Design & Build Offsite Modular construction contract.

HMY were retained by the client during the RIBA Stages 4 and 5 to provide Technical Advisory services and to ensure the contractors proposals accorded with NHS requirements and to monitor the built quality.

The existing ITU spaces within the hospital were not to current standards and the need for social distancing has impacted upon the number of patients that can be treated.
This project addresses the outdated facilities, increases capacity and its design is a direct response to the current pandemic pressures for example provision of isolation rooms and the ability to spilt areas into zones.

Programme pressures dictated the need to complete the ITU Unit in early 2022 along with the Government mandate for the use of modern methods of construction led to the use of a modular solution. The Building was procured under a Design & Build Contract with the detailed design being carried out by chosen Modular Specialist MTX and their consultant team.

The new ITU Facility is located on an existing staff car park directly adjacent to the Richard Stevens Stroke Unit. The building is a stand-alone structure built with an undercroft at ground floor level to facilitate the future extension of the adjacent Stroke unit, connecting with the main hospital. circulation areas via bridge links at ground and first floor levels.
