Sports & Leisure/

Historically we have often worked on sport and leisure buildings linked to university, school and community projects. We have also been increasingly working on standalone pavilions, clubs and hotel buildings.

As with our other work, understanding the client’s requirements and being aware of the constraints on the site, continuity of service and budget are key to success. We are often able to draw out hidden opportunities to help provide outstanding facilities.

Completion/
April 2009
Cost/
£4,000,000

Canterbury Christ Church University appointed Hazle McCormack Young LLP to design a much needed sports facility. With no space for development on the main campus, they entered a joint venture with Barton Court School, on whose grounds the building is situated.

The careful siting of this large building, together with detailing to breakdown the scale of the elevations, has resulted in planning approval. The centre has very few parking spaces as a result of its location and use by an education establishment.

The new sports facility provides an 8-court sports hall with a unique folding partition to enable the facility to be shared with the adjacent Barton Court Grammar School. In addition, a large fitness suite and exercise studio, a dance/aerobics room and a sport performance analysis room have been provided as part of the project. The hall will be also be used for examinations during May and June each year by the School and University.

We are delighted to have developed this new state-of-the-art Sports Centre for a large section of the local community who are studying, or employed, at Canterbury Christ Church University or Barton Court Grammar School. It will provide an excellent teaching space for our academic programmes in Sport Science and Physical Education.

Hotel Tunbridge Wells

In 2009, the practice was asked to design and restore this former ‘King Charles' Boys School House in Tunbridge Wells.

The building is part of The Brew House Hotel and is the centre piece of a series of improvements to both this building and the adjoining buildings in extending the hotel facilities.

We are now on site with our proposals for the extension of the Hotel to create a further 24 new bedrooms including 4 no wheelchair accessible rooms and consolidate the Old School House as the function suite and the Grade II listed buildings adjacent as the Hotel’s restaurant/cafe. This project is due for completion at the end of 2015 at a cost of £8m.

Designing and Building
to the Penny/

Following a successful bid to become a Specialist Visual Arts College, Frances Bardsley School received a grant for a new Visual Arts Centre to be available both to the school and the local community. The grant, however, did not match the cost of the Art Centre if it were to be procured by traditional methods.

HMY therefore liaised with David Madgwick of Framework CDM to construct a building using offsite prefabrication with a hybrid form of ‘design and build’ contract, and a guaranteed maximum price.

With a striking exterior and light airy interior the gallery and workshop building link backs to the existing school, (in particular the Art Department), with dedicated office and toilet facilities. The centre is now capable of being used both as a school facility and totally independently for community use.
